Jersey’s Most Famous Road: The Turnpike

At almost 70 years old, the NJ Turnpike predates the interstate highway system! In this interactive discussion suitable for all ages, participants will learn about the turnpike’s execution, its impact on travel, and how it remains as an emblem of American ideas and values.
Speaker Angus Kress Gillespie, Ph.D. is a professor of American Studies and Urban Studies at Rutgers University. He has written about highways, skyscrapers, and tunnels. His book Twin Towers: The Life of New York City’s World Trade Center was a 1999 New York Times bestseller.
