July’s Selection:  Fire Watch by Connie Willis (1984)

All are welcome to join us as we discuss Connie Willis’s collection of science fiction short stories in Fire Watch.

Plot Summary: This collection includes the title novella (a Hugo and Nebula award winner in 1982) as well as A Letter from the Clearys (also a 1982 Nebula winner), Sidon in the MirrorAll My Darling Daughters (never before published), and eight other stories of varying length but uniformly respectable quality.

About the Author: Connie Willis is popular for her idea-driven speculative fiction that deftly blends humor with serious contemplation of ideas, and is replete with memorable characters. Her novels often explore the borders between Fantasy and Science Fiction. The predicaments her characters must contend with may be grave, but Willis uses humor to lighten the mood. In other stories, her characters deal with absurdity against a more serious frame.
