June’s Selection:  The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (1931)

All are welcome to join us as we discuss Pearl S. Buck’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Good Earth.

Plot Summary: A Chinese peasant overcomes the forces of nature and the frailties of human nature to become a wealthy landowner.

About the Author: Pearl S. Buck, winner of both the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, wrote novels of her beloved China using a wide spectrum of characters, from a humble servant girl to Tzu Hsi, the last empress of China. The themes of Buck’s books tend to center around things that threaten the best of Chinese values and culture-the introduction of Western ideas; revolution; cultural and generational clashes; traditional vs. modern ways. Buck’s first-hand experiences and life in China give a unique air of authenticity to her heartfelt novels.
