Job Posting – Summer Teen Intern

The Old Bridge Public Library is seeking a summer teen intern who will help with our STEM programming. 

Interns, volunteers, and staff work closely to make summer programs run smoothly and to appeal to various age groups/interests. Volunteers are an absolutely VITAL part of our library.  Intern will be “unpaid” but will receive a $1000 stipend at the end of their twelve week term of service.

Applications are available to current teen library volunteers and all teens, 14-18 years old in the Old Bridge community. Once completed applications are received at the library, applicants will be notified about potential interviews for the 12-week positions. Recruitment will begin in April; the application deadline is Friday, April 28. Interns will be selected based on intention, a willingness to see projects through from beginning to end, leadership potential, and specialties and interests. An openness to work in collaborative situations, an ability to engage with the community, and a willingness to learn all parts of library programming– from brainstorming, to creating a budget, to recruiting helpers, to advertising, to program implementation are a must. Teen interns will begin meeting with library staff before school ends in June. Based on individual interns’ interests and what he/she thinks would be successful at the library during the summer and what budgets/pre-planning will allow, teens will plan, advertise, and implement at least one low-cost program for teens, school-aged youth or preschoolers that interns will see through from beginning to end. Programs must be technology-based programs such as coding, robotics, or photo/video editing.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in various aspects of the youth summer programming (planning, advertising, implementation of programs) as assigned
  • Help prepare supplies and materials for kids’ workshops
  • Provide support and guidance to children and assist with group management
  • Design and lead drop-in workshops, lessons, and/or projects

Other duties as required:

  • Experience working with children/youth
  • Interest in education/ leadership/ working with kids/ creating and teaching innovative technology programs for kids
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to receive/follow instructions
  • Willingness to learn and participate in everyday library work (shelving books, keeping areas tidy, programming)
  • Must be self-motivated and able to stay on task without direct supervision
  • Must be available to work approximately 6 hours per week (or as scheduled) during the 12 weeks that school is out for the summer

REQUIRED dates: Saturday June 24, 10am-2pm and Thursday August 17. • Must be 14-18 years old, have a way of transportation to/from the library, must be reliable, on time, and must have the ability to keep supervisor notified about vacations, time off, etc. (We know you are busy! Job Posting – Library Assistant, Digital Support Services (part-time)

The Old Bridge Public Library seeks a part-time Library Assistant to join our Digital Support Services team. This is a position for someone with a sense of humor, strong customer service skills, a detail-oriented approach to technology, and the ability to serve a multicultural population.

Candidates must possess hands-on experience with Windows OS and desktop applications, including recent versions of Microsoft Office, as well as excellent written and spoken communication skills. Candidates should also have working knowledge of computer hardware components and printer administration as well as familiarity with emerging trends in personal computing. Previous library experience a plus. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, staffing the Computer Help Desk, assisting patrons in the use of library technology resources, performing basic troubleshooting of departmental computers, maintaining library equipment, and updating website content.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Employment is contingent on passing a stringent criminal background check. The 22-hour minimum work week will include primarily evening and occasional day and weekend hours. Additional on-call hours may be available. Salary is $16.30 per hour. Library employees are members of AFSCME and contribute to the pension system. Some paid sick leave may apply.
